This is a rare cocktail that successfully marries whisky and another type of alcohol. When possible, choose Canadian whisky.
This cocktail was first made in 1874 at the Manhattan Club in New York. It was concocted to mark a party celebrating the election of Governor William J. Tilden. The bartender (whose name has since been lost) who invented this drink decided to name it after the club where he worked. Fun fact: the host of the evening was Winston Churchill's mother.
